Day One · May 22
Depart Toronto at 2 p.m., arrive Montreal by 6 p.m. Check into your Airbnb in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, then head directly to Schwartz's Deli (3895 Boulevard St-Laurent) for the iconic Montreal smoked meat sandwich and a cherry cola—a rite of passage and perfect low-friction dinner after driving. Day Two · May 23
Start at Jean-Talon Market (8:30 a.m., before crowds). This is a working farmers market where locals actually shop—grab fresh fruit, pastries from Première Moisson, and a café au lait from one of the counter vendors. Spend 90 minutes wandering, eating, and soaking in Montreal's agricultural heartbeat.
Rent a Turo car and drive 40 minutes north to Mont-Tremblant for a 2-hour hike up the mountain. The village at the base is touristy, but the trails are genuine forest—rewarding views, clean air, and a total mood shift. Park at the base of the chairlift (free lot). Back in the city by 5 p.m.
Clean up and head to Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal) and walk the cobblestones toward the waterfront at dusk. Dinner at Joe Beef (2191 Rue Notre-Dame W)—chef-driven, wild seafood-forward menu, anarchic energy, and impossible to book last-minute, so call ahead. If fully booked, Garde Manger (408 Rue Saint-Paul E) is equally excellent and a bit more flexible. End the night at Bar Hopping on Rue Crescent or catch live jazz at Upstairs Jazz Bar (1254 Rue Mackay)—no cover, tight intimate space, real musicians.
Day Three · May 24
Brunch at Lilia (4620 Boulevard Saint-Laurent) in the Plateau—their brioche French toast and espresso are exceptional, and the crowd is local and relaxed. Spend the hour before brunch at the nearby Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal (1380 Rue Sherbrooke O)—world-class permanent collection, never overwhelming, free entry to most galleries.
Leave Montreal by 1 p.m. to arrive back in Toronto by 5 p.m. Take the scenic Rue de la Montagne down from the Plateau to catch a last view of Mount Royal, then merge onto the 20 W toward Toronto. The drive is smooth on Sunday afternoon.
