The Gem Score

How we find the places worth finding.

Every place on WeekendTrips carries a Gem Score, a single number that tells you how hidden, authentic, and genuinely special it is. Here's exactly how we calculate it.

The Formula

Five signals. One score.

Gem Score is one AI judgment, weighing Rarity, Authenticity, Sentiment, Visual Appeal, and Tourist Density together, roughly in that order of emphasis.

Not a fixed formula on separately-measured sub-scores, a single model call reasons about all five at once and returns one 0–100 score.

πŸ’Ž

Rarity

Primary factor

How undiscovered does this place feel? We weigh it heavily, obvious, oversaturated picks score lower even if they're well-reviewed.

🏑

Authenticity

Strong factor

Local ownership, chef-driven menus, family-run operations, independent studios. Chains, franchises, and cookie-cutter concepts that could be anywhere score lower.

πŸ’¬

Sentiment Quality

Moderate factor

Not just a star average, we weigh the actual language in reviews, whether people describe something as 'life-changing', 'like a local', or 'worth coming back for', over a flat rating number.

πŸ“Έ

Visual Appeal

Minor factor

Photogenic, distinctive, memorable in a photo. A minor factor, but it nudges the score when two places are otherwise close.

🚢

Tourist Densitypenalty

Penalty

This factor subtracts from the score. Overcrowded attractions lose points regardless of quality, a packed-out tourist trap can never be a true gem.

The best travel discoveries happen when algorithms listen to locals, not just tourists.

The WeekendTrips Philosophy

How Scoring Works

One model, the same rubric, every time.

Star ratings reward whatever's already popular. Ours asks a more specific question for every place: is this actually rare and well-loved, or just visited a lot?

πŸ€–

One AI judgment call

Each place is scored by an AI model in a single pass, weighing rarity, authenticity, review sentiment, and crowding together to land on one number, not a lookup or a database average.

πŸ’¬

Grounded in real reviews

The model reads the place's actual name, category, and available review text rather than guessing, so the score reflects what people who've actually been there wrote, not just a star average.

πŸ—‚οΈ

Cached, not reused blindly

Once a place is scored, we cache it for seven days so repeat visits load instantly. After that window, the next visit triggers a fresh score rather than serving a stale one indefinitely.

βš–οΈ

One consistent rubric

Every place is measured against the exact same five factors, so a hidden noodle counter and a boutique hotel are held to the same standard instead of being compared on incompatible metrics like follower counts.
