Weekend in
Day One · June 19
Arrive in Bellingham by 6:00 PM (drive I-5 North, 90 minutes). Check into your Airbnb in the Fairhaven neighborhood by 6:30 PM. Head to Colophon Café on Holly Street for casual dinner—locally roasted coffee, made-to-order sandwiches, and a beloved brewpub downstairs where kids can grab mac & cheese while parents enjoy craft beer in a relaxed, family-welcoming atmosphere. Walk off dinner with a sunset stroll along the Fairhaven waterfront boardwalk.
Day Two · June 20
Start at Bellingham Farmers Market (Saturday mornings, downtown at Depot Market Square, May–November). Let kids pick fresh fruit and pastries from local vendors; grab breakfast from Kuleto's Pizzeria nearby for wood-fired focaccia sandwiches. The market energy is genuinely local and unhurried.
Drive south 15 minutes to Lake Padden Park (rent a car via Turo for the weekend). Rent kayaks or paddle boats for 1.5 hours on the lake—crystal-clear water, mountains in background, family-paced and magical. Pack a picnic or grab sandwiches from Aslan Brewing's food truck (on-site most weekends) beforehand.
Return to Fairhaven. Dinner at The Oyster Bar on Harris Avenue—raw bar with excellent local oysters, steamed clams, fish & chips, and crab melts. Kids love pointing at the seafood display; casual, boisterous, genuinely local crowd.
Day Three · June 21
Visit Bellingham Railway Museum (opens 10 AM, 10-minute drive from Fairhaven)—kids can explore restored trains and railcars, climb aboard, and learn local history without feeling like a tourist trap. Grab brunch after at Rhododendron Café back in Fairhaven for omelets, pancakes, and fresh fruit bowls.
Leave by noon to beat Seattle traffic. Return via I-5 South (scenic alternative: take Chuckanut Drive south from Bellingham—a stunning 20-minute coastal switchback drive through old-growth forest and cliffs overlooking the Sound, joining I-5 near Anacortes).
