How About Candlepin Bowling In Boston?

on March 20, 2019

Sacco's Candlepin Bowling

Described as “a taste of old-fashioned America,” this old bowling alley is known as a different kind of historic institution. Candlepin blowing is a type of bowling played only in New England and Eastern Canada – said to have been invented in Massachusetts in 1881.

Open since 1939, Sacco’s Bowl Haven (45 Day St, Somerville MA) has long been a well-known staple in the Boston area. Although it has now been taken over by the Flatbread Pizza Company, it still has that old-time, nostalgic feel. Yes, you read correct: Sacco’s now also has the advantage of including delicious, freshly made, all-natural, wood-fired, clay oven flatbread pizza…and we all know how amazing pizza and bowling go together!

There is some debate as to whether old-fashioned candlepin bowling is supposed to be harder or easier than regular bowling – but if you’re used to the more modern, bigger balls of ten-pin, this may prove a fun challenge.

Bowl here and see another side of New England, away from the crowds and the more commonly known historic areas.

Bowling opens at 10am each day.
The kitchen is open from 11am-11:30pm Monday to Saturday, 11am-10:30pm on Sundays.
