Groundhog Day Live In Punxsutawney PA!

on January 15, 2019

How many times have you watched Groundhog Day?

If you are fascinated by the superstition of an additional six weeks of winter being determined by whether (pun intended) or not a groundhog sees his shadow on February 2, there is only one way to fulfill your innate curiosities and that is by actually experiencing Groundhog Day live.

Each year, Punxsutawney Phil climbs out of his hole at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney Philadelphia. If Phil sees his shadow, then according to folklore, it means that there will unfortunately mean an additional six weeks of winter. If he does not, it means the warmer weather will be approaching quickly.

The event along with the aforementioned movie from 1993 has brought international attention to the small Pennsylvania community and (at least for day of the year) has made it a popular tourist destination.

Punxsutawney has a whole lineup of events planned around the moment and these include live entertainment as well as refreshments being offered.

Here are a few tips if you’re planning on spending the weekend in PA.

  • There is no charge to get into Gobbler’s Knob
  • Gobbler’s Knob is divided into two separate viewing areas, one for families and one for students.
  • The Gate at Gobblers Knob opens at 3:00 a.m. Phil’s Prognostication is at approximately 7:25 a.m.
  • There is a bonfire at the Knob from approximately 3:00 a.m. There is no shelter available, so visitors should come prepared for the weather: hand and feet warmers, layered clothing and blankets.
  • R.V. parking is available at Wal-Mart or Punxsutawney Plaza.
