C & O Canal, Washington

One of the best weekend getaway ideas in Washington is exploring the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C & O Canal).

The historic park (Martinsburg, WV 25405) has an interesting history dating back to the 18th century and runs for 184 miles along the bank of the Potomac River. Offering some of the most beautiful views in the city, there are many fantastic ways to take advantage.

– The entire 184 miles of the park that lies between Georgetown and Cumberland, MD can be biked. The Capital Crescent Trail is paved, making it even easier to get some exercise in while touring the wonders of Washington. Bike rentals are also available.

– If you’re even more of the outdoors type and like to angle, fishing is also available, but be warned that you definitely need to have a license before you’re permitted to try and hook dinner home.

– If you would like to get your paddle on, canoeing and kayaking are some of the park’s most desirable options. Boats can be rented from Fletchers Cove.

– Believe it or not, you can even saddle up and go horseback riding in the C & O Canal. Riding is available on a 160 mile stretch, but isn’t allowed between Georgetown and Swains Lock or from Offutt Street to the Cumberland.
