Skiing in Okemo

Just because summer is gone, doesn’t mean you should stay indoors. Below are just a few of our favorite New England winter getaways – perfect for a weekend trip from Boston.

  •  Snow sports: Skiing where the mountains meet the sea, at The Camden Snow Bowl in Maine. Or snowboard into the wee hours of the morning, at Crotched Mountain, in New Hampshire, which keeps its runs open until 3am. If you are looking for adventure, head back-country skiing at Sugarbush in Vermont or to Okemo for a roller-coaster like run on the Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster. Okemo also is known for having some of the best groomed trails. If you are not up for skiing, tubing is a great option – Nashoba Valley Ski Area is less than an hour away from Boston, and has 18 tubing lanes.
  • Try Skijoring: Want to try something a little different? And dog owners: does your pooch love to play in the snow? Then don’t leave your best pal behind when looking for a getaway this season. Usually done with larger dogs (30 pounds or more) – and if you don’t have a dog, some places, like New England Dog Sledding will lend you theirs (located in West Bethel, Maine, about 3.5 hours away from Boston). Peace Pups Dog Sledding in Vermont also offers beginner’s lessons.
  • Bundle up and go Dog Sledding: An even more traditional winter activity, try New Hampshire’s Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel, where over 100 rescue dogs long to be the ones chosen for your sled. The dogs are rescued and given a “job” and a home for life. Tours can be relaxing – or as interactive as you like.
  • Explore the great white outdoors by snowmobile: Snowmobiling another way to make the most of the white stuff. A variety of half-day and even multiday tours are available at Sun Valley Sports in Bethel, Maine, including evening rides with dinner… and fireworks. For the less experienced, Northern Extremes Snowmobiling offers guided tours of the White Mountains (one to three hours long) which include an orientation session. Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont offers a wide variety of accommodations with amenities like hot tubs and pools – and a few one-hour snowmobiling tours to choose from.
  • Cozy up in a room with a fireplace:  The Notchland Inn in Hart’s Location, New Hampshire, has eight rooms, five suites and two cottages; and each, except one, has its own fireplace. The Stone Hill Inn in Stowe, Vermont, has a glass fireplace in every room, which faces not only the bedroom, but the bathroom as well, right next to the two-person jacuzzi tub. Cozy AND romantic!
