What do Bobby Orr and Stan Lee have in common?
The two respective hockey and comic icons will both be in Toronto this weekend. If that sounds like a strange coupling, it is and if you are wondering why they will both be in T.O., it’s because for the first time ever, sports fans can now join in on the Northern-nerdiness this weekend as Fan Expo Canada unveils its new sports pavilion tomorrow.
Dubbed as the Canadian Comicon (a nod to the annual ComiCon in San Diego every summer), Fan Expo Canada has widely become one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city with this weekend’s festivities at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre expected to draw more than 90,000 people through its gates.
To say that this year’s event will be the biggest in the show’s history is not an exaggeration. In addition to the big-name comic and television celebrities in attendance including Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Stan Lee, George Takei (Star Trek), and the cast of Walking Dead, the sports pavilion will feature big name stars like Bobby Orr, Joe Montana, Joe Sakic and Hulk Hogan. As a result, this will be the first Fan Expo Canada that features areas dedicated to comics, science fiction, horror, anime, gaming, and now sports.
Weekendtrips will be all over Fan Expo Canada and we have comprised our top 10 reasons why you should check out the event which opens on August 22 and runs until August 25.

Star Trek vs. Star Wars b>
Just like Coke vs. Pepsi, the Yankees vs. the Red Sox and ‘NSYNC vs. the Backstreet Boys, it has often been said that you can only be a Trekkie or a Skywalker. With that being said, fans of both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises will have plenty to look forward to at Fan Expo as some of the biggest names from both movies will be in attendance. From Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Karl Urban (Bones) to Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and the Ian McDiarmid (The Emperor), all of the celebrities will be available for Q&As, photo sessions and autographs.
One of the biggest fashion subcultures in Japan, Fan Expo Canada will present the Lolita style in all of its grandeur. There will be a Lolita Ambassador Appointment Ceremony where an Official Lolita representative for Toronto will be named, as well as a Lolita Style World Event fashion show and premium photo shoot.
Toronto Steampunk Society
While comic conventions of any kind are primarily known for the various costumes that are on display, the Steampunk Society will take things to a whole new level in Canada. Attendees are invited to dress up as Explorers, Adventurers, Airship Pirates and Evil Scientists and join in on a costuming panel. There will also be workshops available to teach visitors how to build gadgets and props as well as a Steampunk literature symposium called “Steampunk Author Panel: Words Driven By Steam”

If you thought that sports was an odd fit for Fan Expo, an even stranger one might be Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash, who will debut his new project, Slasher Films at the exhibition. The musician will unveil his new film, Nothing Left To Lose, and discuss the relationship between horror and rock music.
Sailor Moon’s 20th Anniversary & Cast Reunion
To mark the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon, Fan Expo Canada will host a special presentation by Linda Ballantyne (Sailor Moon), Susan Roman (Lita/Sailor Jupiter), Katie Griffin (Raye/Sailor Mars), Toby Proctor (Darien/Tuxedo Mask) and director John Stocker.
Taking a page from the CNE (although let’s hope the Fan Expo burgers are better), for the first time Fan Expo Canada will offer a specialty-themed menu featuring Star Wars treats and Walking Dead desserts.
Here’s a taste of what to expect:
The Imperial Burger, (Inspired by Darth Maul) – This “deadly” burger channels the Star Wars villain Darth Maul, known for his double-bladed lightsaber and red face. With a bright red burger bun and toppings like pickled hot peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded mozzarella cheese, and Hank Daddy’s very own four pepper hot mustard sauce on a 6oz all-beef patty, this burger has a super spicy flavor worthy of the dark side of the force.
The Rebel Burger, (Inspired by Yoda) – This intergalactic burger has a bright green bun resembling everyone’s favourite Rebel — Yoda! Toppings include sliced Granny Smith apples, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese curds and Hank Daddy’s award-winning honey mustard sauce on a 6oz all-beef patty. As Yoda might say, this burger eat you must!
The Cinna-Brain, (Inspired by The Walking Dead) – This deadly raspberry concoction will feed your zombie hunger— it looks exactly like a bloody mess of brains!
The Darth Vader Bun – Cinnamon spice and all things nice? No way — this bun is pure evil! A classic cinnamon bun sprinkled with “Dark Darth” crumbs (Oreo crumbs).
The Princess Leia Bun – A classic cinnamon bun inspired by Princess Leia’s world-famous hairstyle.
