If seeing two guys square off against each other in the most athletically-demanding sport is your thing, and you live in Toronto, get ready because the live mixed martial arts is on its way back.
The UFC returns to Toronto in September and the main event that sees light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones take on #1 contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson, is guaranteed to be one of the best bouts in recent memory.
Tickets for the September 21 card at the Air Canada Centre went on-sale today and it will be the Jones’ third headlining fight in T.O. If he successfully defends his title, he will break former champion Tito Ortiz’s record of five consecutive light-heavyweight title defenses adding an increased side plot to the match.
Gustafsson enters the fight with six straight wins and a 15-1 all-time record (7-1 in the UFC). The agile Swede was scheduled to fight in April in his native country, but was forced to pull out because of injury.
“Jon Jones is re-writing the record book for the light heavyweight division,” UFC President Dana White said. “He is one of the pound-for-pound best in the world with a record-tying five straight title defenses by age 25. This bout with Gustafsson is an awesome fight. Alex is a big man plus he’s mean and hungry – and excited for the opportunity to fight Jones.”
In addition to the main event, another UFC belt will also be defended in Toronto as interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao (32-1, 1 NC) will take on #4 ranked contender Eddie Wineland (20-8-1). Four Canadians will also be in action.
Tickets for UFC 165: JONES vs. GUSTAFSSON went on-sale today and are priced at $450, $300, $200, $150, $95 and $75.
