For an action-packed, Hollywood-movie-style day with friends or family, be sure to visit Universal Studios Hollywood. Behind-the-scenes studio tours, thrill rides, and spectacular shows make this a must-do on your visit to LA.

Although smaller in size and number of rides than its sister park in Orlando – Universal Studios Hollywood won’t disappoint.

Universal Studios Hollywood (100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City CA) is located just 15 minutes northwest from downtown LA.

The Studio Tour takes you on set at a working movie studio, built with creative consultation with director Steven Spielberg. Comedian Jimmy Fallon welcomes you through a video tour, and you can visit the set of Wisteria Lane (from the TV series Desperate Housewives). There’s old classics like the Bates Motel from psycho, and scenes from Jaws. Experience also the award-winning King Kong 360 3-D, described as the world’s largest and most intense 3D experience, and created by Peter Jackson, writer, producer and director of the 2005 film.

Of course a behind-the-scenes would not be complete without a visit to the Special Effects Stage for a look at the technology behind blockbuster Hollywood movies.

The park also has a number of up-close and personal Hollywood theme rides, including (but not limited to):

  • Transformers™: The Ride 3D – an “out of this world” experience
  • Revenge of the Mummy℠: The Ride – an indoor roller-coaster taking you at speeds of up to 45mph
  • The Simpsons™ – a visually-stunning virtual roller-coaster
  • Jurassic Park®: The Ride – face treacherous dinosaurs and then plunge down a raft ride (you will get soaked at the end).

On a side note, the DeLorean from Back to the Future is permanently parked at this theme park in LA.

The VIP and Front of the Line ticket packages are well worth the extra cash. The Exclusive VIP Experience gives you exclusive access as well as your own personal tour guide and a buffet lunch. The Front of the Line package, just as it’s name suggests, takes you right to the front of the line at the rides and attractions, so you don’t have to wait in line, which allows you more time to see and experience all the park has to offers.
