Both evening and daytime tours with a twist are available which include visits with ghosts and graveyards and take place in Kingston, Ottawa, and Toronto.

On the haunted walk, visitors hear ghastly tales that are thoroughly researched and specifically designed to address any prevalent skepticism. The evening tours are led by lantern-light and there are private group options available.

Crime & Punishment Jail Tour

Guided Tours at the old Carleton County Jail (now the HI – Ottawa Jail Hostel)

This tour departs from the lobby of the HI Ottawa Jail Hostel at 75 Nicholas Street.

Tour the Old Carleton County Jail and learn about why Ottawa was once considered ‘the most dangerous town in North America’. Learn about early prison life, as you see the jail cells, death row and the last working gallows in Canada. This tour includes stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Commentary presented by experienced tour guides from The Haunted Walk of Ottawa in partnership with Hostelling International. A portion of the proceeds assists in the preservation of the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel.

Ghosts & The Gallows Tour
Duration: 90 mins

From May-October this tour departs from our ticket office at 46 ½ Sparks Street (near the corner of Sparks St. and Elgin St.)

From November-April this tour departs from the lobby of the Ottawa Jail Hostel at 75 Nicholas St.

Visit death row and the gallows inside the Old Carleton County Jail and other haunted locations while your tour guide recounts more of Ottawa’s supernatural encounters. Was the wrong man hanged for the murder of D’Arcy McGee? Does he haunt the jail today? This tour includes stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Locations on this tour may be frightening to young children. A portion of the proceeds assist in the preservation of the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel.

This tour exposes Ottawa’s risqué history: from the misbehaving citizens of Lowertown, to political scandals, affairs of the heart, and the outrageous choice of Ottawa as capital. Quench your thirst en route, with stops at local pubs (drinks not included). This tour is not appropriate for children.

The Haunted Walk of Old Toronto

Ghosts, graveyards, hangings and haunts. From the old military town of York to the metropolitan city of today, discover Toronto’s darker history. Stroll along the haunted cobblestone streets of the historic Distillery District by lantern light. Visit the old hanging grounds near the St. Lawrence Market, where many a rebel, and perhaps a few innocent souls, met with a gruesome end.
