If you plan on making a Weekendtrip to the Kawartha Lakes region, and really want to get into the spirit of the Kawarthas, there is no better way to do it than climbing aboard the Kawartha Spirit.
The Kawartha Spirit (offered by Fenelon Falls Boat Cruises) is a cruise ship that boards daily rides across the Trent-Severn Waterway in the Kawartha Lakes region. The ship is the largest Canadian Coast Guard approved vessel serving the region, with a boarding capacity of 200.
The cruise begins in Fenelon Falls and almost immediately goes through the highest chamber lock on the lower Trent-Severn Waterway. If you are wondering what a lock is, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. The lock literally lowers the boat so that it can continue on its journey despite the differing water levels from where the boat docks to where it continues on. It’s almost like you are on a slow-moving water rollercoaster with its version of a ‘drop.’
The cruise takes you past Fenelon Falls and along the Fenelon River onto Sturgeon Lake. The captain then points the boat to Sturgeon Point which is known locally as “Millionaires Row” where some of the most stunning homes and cottages are visible. It struck me as a Northern version of the celebrity mansions you would find in the Hollywood Hills.
Really, the “Kawartha Spirit” is just having fun and in that regard, there is truly something about the cruise that will appeal to everyone.
There is a bar on board the boat and really, is there anything better than boat boozin’? With that being said, the passengers that I rode with were primarily all families and the relaxing cruise is the perfect way to take in some of some of the area’s best sights and sounds while also been able to spend quality time with the ones you love.
With the cruise ship ready to move over to Stoney Lake next year, this summer could be your last chance to check it out while it is in Fenelon Falls.
