If you’re looking for a little culture in the Kawarthas region you don’t have to look any further than Pane Vino Trattoria & Wine Bar in Lindsay.
Featuring a Greek/Italian fusion menu, the restaurant’s vision was created by its owner and sommelier, Louis Karkabasis who combines both his Greek roots and his Bay-area background to create one of the best dining atmospheres around. While the food is profoundly traditional with an artistic flair, the laissez-faire vibe is what gives Pane Vino (56 Kent Street West, Lindsay ON) its true charm and appeal. The restaurant has a casual dress code with only one strict rule. All hats must be removed before dining.
“I have to maintain some standards,” Karkabasis chirped to me with a smile.
My meal started with a wide array of appetizers including delicious marinated olives (imported directly from Karkabasis’ estate in Greece), succulent Gamberetti tiger shrimp scampi and secret meatballs that weren’t listed on the menu.
From there, I chose a well-done Filetto di Manzo butcher block 10 oz. AAA Black Angus steak with roasted potatoes as my entree, while my dining partner opted for the Pesce Fresco (a pan-seared and maple syrup glazed salmon).
Given Karkabasis’ esteemed reputation as being the foremost sommelier in the region, our dinners were perfectly complemented with wine pairings perfectly suited to our respective palettes.
My meal was topped off with a stunning Torta al Formaggio cheesecake.
While I could rave about the food as most of the other diners around me did for what seemed like the majority of their time in the restaurant, what struck me as the best part was Karkabasis’ demeanor. Truly personifying the friendly nature of most people in the Kawarthas region, the Pane Vino owner spent nearly 3-4 hours at my table asking me about my life story and subsequently sharing his along with his vision for the restaurant. At no time were either of my water and wine glasses empty and it has been a long time since I have been more satisfied by my meal or the company that I enjoyed it with.
Just like a delicious dinner can satisfy the appetite, the excellent service that you will find at Pane Vino will satisfy your soul.
Stop by the place for a drink. I guarantee you will stay for more.
