Even the most ‘Grinchy’ of us can enjoy the simple pleasure of holiday lights over the Christmas period and Californians do it like no one else – on water! Floating parades of lights have long been a favorite holiday tradition in Southern California. Whether you hop on a boat, or grab dinner at a waterfront restaurant, or watch from the shoreline, there are plenty of holiday parades to catch in Los Angeles County (and the OC) this December.
Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Parade celebrates its 51st Anniversary this year with it’s theme of ‘Holidays Around the World’. Senator Roderick Wright will be proceeding over events as Grand Marshal that takes place on Saturday 7th December. See website for more details.
The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will feature more than 80 boats lavishly decorated according to this year’s theme of ‘Big Bay Toy Parade’. The event is held two consecutive Sundays 8th and 15th December. See website for more details.
Marina Del Rey will be celebrating 50 years of parades with a firework display followed by the parade on Saturday 14th December. Basketball fans will appreciate the Grand Marshals of Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss. See website for more details.
In its 22nd year, brightly decorated boats will parade through the King Harbor marina in Redondo Beach. This year’s theme ‘Dive into the Season’ is a tribute to surfing legend Bob Meistrell, who passed away this year; his family will be serving as the Grand Marshall. See website for more details.
From Beautiful multi-million dollar yachts, to kayaks and canoes will be rocking Newport Beach harbor in a dazzling array of holiday lights and music with this year’s theme of ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’. Running from Wednesday, 18th December through to Sunday, 22nd December, Newport’s parade has been hailed as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by the New York Times. Finally, in Long Beach the oldest parade in SoCal will celebrate it’s staggering 67th year as boats parade around Naples Island considered to be one of the best displays of holiday lights in Southern California. This year’s theme is ‘Vintage Christmas’. See website for more details.
