Saugatuck State Park View From the Beach

Looking for a weekend getaway that offers the relaxation of sandy beaches? How about the adventure of exploring nature? Saugatuck Dunes park has both! Explore the park’s steep slopes, rolling hills, and sand dunes reaching over 200 feet tall.

Located on a secluded strip on the shores of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck Dunes State Park (6575 138th Avenue, Holland MI) is about a two and a half hour drive away form Chicago, and three hours from Detroit.

The park spans over 1000 acres and has over 2.5 miles of shore line. It’s remote enough that you can feel an escape from the city, but close enough to the comforts of a harbor town.

There are a number of great hiking trails: keep an eye for deer, wild turkeys, foxes, butterflies, birds and other local wildlife. Bring a picnic and hike to the beach for the day. Sunset on the beach is spectacular!

The park has a long, narrow beach that can be reached after a half-hour hike through the woods, from the parking lot. It may sound long, but it’s SO worth it! The water is pristine and inviting. The sand is clean and soft. It may be lesser-known than nearby Oval Beach, but it also has the advantage of being less crowded.

For those looking for a little more adventure, there are also Dune Rides nearby.

The park is open year round, and you can do activities like cross-country skiing in the winter, but it’s best to visit between late spring and fall. It’s a day use area only, but you can find a variety of great accommodation options in nearby Saugatuck/Douglas, just 15 minutes away.
