Something is brewing in the South Bay of Los Angeles and it’s tasty! For a long time, the South Bay of Los Angeles County was known for surf, sand and punk rock bands like Black Flag, 98 Mute, Descendants, Circle Jerks and of course the most famous non punk export, The Beach Boys. These days there is more than music brewing in the South Bay – it’s beer! Here are some of the best breweries in LA.
It started with the Strand Brewing Company set up by two friends in an industrial park in Torrance in 2010. Now the South Bay is full of breweries including El Segundo Brewing which was founded by Rob Croxall who left a career in aerospace to become a brewmaster, The Dudes’ Brewing who are about to release their canned range and Smog City Brewery who won Gold with their Groundwork Coffee Porter at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest to name just a few!
Some of the breweries have their own tasting rooms, and you can hop on a tour with LA Beer Hop and let someone else do the driving for a five hour trip around Los Angeles’ finest craft beer breweries for $65 per person.
If five hours of beer is too much, then head over to Select Beer Store (1613 S. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach) where you can taste many of LA’s finest beers at your own pace. Knowledgeable staff will happily guide you through the vast choice on offer with 500 beers on offer, 12 on tap. They collaborate with local breweries for special events so check their website for details.
