With the Zoo Boo and Fall Festival just around the corner at the Detroit Zoo, there’s plenty of excitement in the air. But this fall, Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) board members have an extra gleam in their eyes.
That’s because the zoo (8450 W 10 Mile Rd, Royal Oak MI) is celebrating some exciting news: an anticipated $10 million grant from the Polk Family Fund to help build a 24,000-square-foot penguin conservation center — the largest project ever undertaken by the zoo.
Once the $21 million conservation center is complete, it will offer an incredible opportunity for zoo guests to see a penguin “deep dive” as the birds soar through a chilled artic area. The exhibit will offer views from above and below water unlike anything else in the world, even in the wild.
