If you ever wanted a taste of Norway’s culture, now’s your chance.
The Scandinavian country’s National Company of Contemporary Dance, Carte Blanche makes its historic first-appearance ever at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre (53 Elgin St., Ottawa ON), with its high-energy show, 3 O’Clock In The Afternoon.
Choreographed by Ina Christel Johannessen, the politically-gripping and poetic piece, focuses on both geographic and political boundaries both in the mind and body. The concepts explored include how humans belong together and how, despite this fact, find themselves still creating distance with each other. Known for her unmistakable movement, language, costumes and dance cinematography, Johannessen is an expert at both using and molding emotion.
Ina Christel Johannesson is one of the world’s top choreographers and has created 13 works for Carte Blanche. Originally trained at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, she now teaches at the same facility. She is known for meshing high-energy physical movement with theatrical elements and is heavily involved in the lighting and set design of her own work.
The show is performed by a troupe of 12 dancers, and is set to an electronic score. 3 O’Clock In The Afternoon features a set with five doors that open to grant passage and reveal hidden artwork. As the doors open and close, the dancers strive to get past their separation and reconnect with each other.
Carte Blanche was founded in 1989 and is the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance. It tours extensively, both locally and abroad. The group averages two new pieces each year.
In addition to the performance, Carte Blanche’s rehearsal director, Annabelle Bonnery will be teaching a free dance master class for local Ottaa and Gatineau students.
