One of Ottawa’s best-kept secrets is Upper Canada Cranberries, the only commercial cranberry grower in Eastern Ontario.
The operation (2283 Stagecoach Road, Ottawa ON) is run by Lyle Slater, whose farm is located only 12 minutes away from the Ottawa airport.
Locals recommend taking a tour of the farm first and then heading over to Slater’s store to purchase some of the freshest dried cranberries and cranberry juice available in Ontario.
Slater was initially in the excavation business before reading about cranberries in a pamphlet he found in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. Inspired by what he read, he used his 100 acres of farmland to become one of only three cranberry growers in Ontario.
The farmer says that cranberries themselves are quite fruitful (pun intended) in terms of the benefit they provide to one’s health. They are loaded with essential nutrients including vitamin C, Beta-Carotene and more. Research has also shown that they can be used to treat and prevent several ailments.
From a business perspective, transitioning into becoming a cranberry farmer also made sense because they are the last fruit of the season.
