Celebrate Groundhog Day With Wiarton Willie Festival

on January 29, 2013

Bill Murray will never forget Groundhog Day, but just in case you aren’t the movie star… February 2nd is quickly approaching and that means it’s time to find out how long the winter season will last.

Every February 2nd, Wiarton, Ontario (566 Berford Street, Wiarton ON) hosts worldwide audiences as it’s most famous furry resident, Wiarton Willie makes his official weather prediction at 8:07 a.m. If Willie appears and doesn’t see his shadow, that is believed to mean that an early Spring is on its way. If he does, superstition dictates that the cold will last for an additional six weeks.

With the attention that Wiarton has received, the city now has a three-day festival centered around its biggest weekend of the year.

Things kick off on Friday with a “Wake Up Willie Comedy Show” featuring stand-up acts from The Gigi Sisters, the Owen Sound Improv Group, Chuck Byrn and Johnny Gardhouse. Friday will also feature a “Monte Carlo” night and even a Battle of the Bands competition.

After Willie makes his Groundhog Day main event call on Saturday morning, the village will host a free pancake breakfast for all attendees. At 9 a.m. a “Pop Stars Tribute Show” will take place featuring Lady Gaga and Katy Perry cover artists and then it’s time for “Willie’s Got Talent” (although I won’t even attempt to venture a guess as to what that will entail).

In the evening, Canadian rock band Sloan will rock the stage and ring in Groundhog Day 2013 with legendary status.

The fun isn’t over on Sunday (which is primarily intended for kids). There is an interactive puppet show, a variety show, and a host of other free family activities. A shaker maze, outdoor family skating, snowhill, market place and food festival will also all be available.
