One of the biggest shopping days of the year is Black Friday and the Friday after Thanksgiving serves as the American answer to Boxing Day in Canada. It is the biggest shopping day of the year when retailers offer promotional sales to start the holiday season.
While Black Friday isn’t a national holiday, it certainly can feel like one where stores open extremely early and there are line-ups and chaos at malls across the country.
The “Black Friday” name originated in Philadelphia where it was originally intended to describe the heavy traffic after Thanksgiving. After 1975, it took on a new kind of meaning to describe the profit retailers made after traditionally suffering financial losses from January to November.
In Chicago, while big chain stores like Macy’s and Wal-Mart advertise their Black Friday sales in advance and through various advertising, here is a list we compiled of Black Friday sales in Chicago
