It took me a long time to realize that you can get a coffee from a place other than Starbucks. Once I made the realization, it opened up a whole new world of java possibility. Here are my top 10 picks for the best coffee shops in Philly.

1. Old City Coffee
There are two “Old City” locations in Philadelphia, but both are known for their great brews. The establishment has produced fresh batches of high-grade Arabica coffee for more than 25 years and it is known to be a favorite among locales. (221 Church Street, Philadelphia PA & Reading Terminal Market, 12th & Arch Streets, Philadelphia PA)

2. Rocket Cat Café
Known for its espresso, Fishtown’s Rocket Cat Café offers some interesting views as well. Nestled between the Shepard Fairey mural and a variety of vegan-friendly restaurants, the java hotspot is for those that like a little distraction with their morning roast. (2001 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia PA)

3. Gryphon Café
Continuing with the creative artist theme, the Gryphon offers live entertainment to complement your coffee. There is a weekly schedule of both independent music acts and open mic-nights. (105 W. Lancaster Ave., Philadelphia PA)

4. Chhaya Café
If you’d like a little lunch with your morning wake-up call, Chhaya has a great menu of fresh items. Enjoy the peach and fig salad with honeyed walnuts, or a prosciutto, apple and mozzarella Panini. (1823 E. Passyunk Ave., Philadelphia PA)

5. High Point Café
Espressos and crepes are the High Point of the day at this quaint stop. (7210 Cresheim Rd., Philadelphia PA)

6. Town Hall Coffee Co.
One of my favorite spots on the list is Town Hall, simply because of its scrumptious pear and chocolate scones. In addition to great coffee, the pastries are simply to die for. (358 Montgomery Ave., Philadelphia PA)

7. Good Karma Café
If you believe in good karma, then this place is meat for you. Owner David Arrell emphasizes fair trade and organic coffee and employs green construction in his establishment. (331 S. 22nd Street, Philadelphia PA)

8. Grindcore House
If you’re a vegan and love java, you probably already know about Grindcore House. It’s a place where coffee drinkers can choose from a variety of non-dairy creamers and meatless, eggless, and milkless pastries and sandwiches. (1515 S. 4th Street, Philadelphia PA)

9. Mugshots
Another environmentally-friendly coffee shop, Mugshots uses recyclable packaging, has vegan and organic options and opts for fair-trade coffee. Not only will the coffee make you feel warm and fuzzy inside but so will knowing that you made a difference. (2831 Girard Ave., Philadelphia PA)

10. Chestnut Hill Coffee Company
You can smell the caramelizing beans a block away as you walk up to the Chestnut Hill Coffee Company. There is a roaster upstairs and a coffee bar downstairs. Feelin’ like some soup? Just ask and you’ll be served up something hearty. (8620 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia PA)
