Upper Canada Village’s Alight at Night Festival Sure To Put Kids In Christmas Spirit

on December 12, 2012

The only question about the 12th Annual Alight at Night Festival is whether the approximately one million lights will shine brighter than the faces of your kids when they take in the one-of-a-kind spectacle at Upper Canada Village. Last year, the Festival added state-of-the-art LED Wall Washer lighting that bathes the historic facades and period architecture of the buildings in the hues of complementary colours. This creates a dramatic effect against the Village’s traditional festival setting. Last year’s event drew over 32,000 people.

Families can walk through the “picture-perfect” postcard setting and enjoy horse-drawn wagons, romantic carriage rides for two and even board a life-size Toy Train. With the sweet sounds of holiday music, festive dining and shopping also available, the Alight at Night (13740 County Road 2, Morrisburg ON) is perfect for adults and kids alike.

Bundle up for an evening stroll through this “picture-perfect postcard setting.” Now in its 12th year, the Alight at Night Festival has become a favourite family tradition. Now there are even Overnight Getaway Packages available making it even easier to book it as a Weekendtrip.

The Festival opened in November and runs nightly Thursdays-Sundays from December 1 – December 23 and is also open on December 26-31 and January 1-5.

Admission is $13 per adult, $10 per senior (age 65+) and youth (age 6-12) and free for kids 5 and under. It includes a wagon ride, train ride and parking.

Reserving Wagons for Groups
– Wagons may be reserved ahead for your group. Maximum capacity is 15 people per wagon. $252.38 (includes taxes and administration fee) per wagon applies and includes admission for the group (with a maximum of 15 people). The carriage ride includes admission to the Festival, a private tour of the lights through village streets, a departing gift (Village bread and cheese and sparking apple cider), and a $20 gift certicate for Pommier Jewelers in Cornwall. Ride The Toy Train
– Illuminated by a multitude of lights, families can ride the Toy Train through Crysler Park. Rides depart nightly every half hour starting at 5:30 p.m. until closing. Limited seating available. The train ride is included with admission to Alight at Night.

Visions of a Victorian Christmas
The Visions of a Victorian Christmas exhibit gives visitors an elaborate glimpse into the origins of some of the popular traditions associated with the season today. Drop in to marvel at beautifully animated 19th century tableaus of the traditional family Christmas dinner, church carollers, and delightful Dickens characters, all within the walls of this majestic mansion. Picture walking through this stately home amid scenes of beautifully dressed carollers, a family celebrating a traditional Victorian Christmas dinner or how about Scrooge tucked into his bed? This year Alight will unveil a series of vignettes in Crysler Hall using new life size animatronics to bring a traditional Victorian Christmas to life.

Crysler Hall Sound & Light Spectacular

The star attraction at the festival guaranteed to dazzle the senses is a nightly Sound & Light Spectacular on the exterior of the stately Crysler Hall in the heart of the Village. The light show will be set to the following songs: Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve/ Sarajevo, Let it Snow and Jingle Bells.

Here’s a short clip:

Christmas Carolling
Get in the spirit of the season and join our sing-along carolling on select evenings in Christ Church. Holiday music piped into the air at different locations throughout the site adds to the festive mood each evening. Here’s a schedule to participate.

Follow your nose to the bakery where you can find the bakers whipping up homemade bread and cinnamon buns nightly. You can find the fresh baked cinnamon buns and bread for purchase at the Village Store. Cinnamon Buns are also available for purchase in the Cook’s Tavern and the Chip Hut.

The Village Store
The Village Store will be open every night of the festival as well, offering Christmas gift ideas including hand-made crafts, souvenirs and specialty food items, plus a tantalizing selection of sweets at the Village Store’s Old-Fashioned Candy Shoppe.
